If you haven’t already, could you do the opening to Sonic CD, Sonic Boom? My sister and her boyfriend got it via XBOX live points yesterday, and we learned that the opening theme is different. Apparently they lost the rights to it? Which sucks cause it’s a great jam. So, thoughts? :D
Hey, everyone! Did they really lose the rights? I know that the JAP/PAL soundtrack is featured prominently on the rerelease, with the option of the US soundtrack, so maybe they just didn’t include the opening? Either way, it is one of my favorite tracks—especially since it was rereleased on the 20th anniversary CD, which includes the entire song!
I love the synth sounds, the driving percussion, and all the guitar lines at the beginning. It’s very catchy! The vocals are absolutely lovely, especially the harmonies at the chorus! The modulation at the chorus is one that I approve of, because we don’t expect it, and it’s really effective. The half-step modulation seems to be quite prominent in this era and genre, as it’s present in “Super Sonic Racing”, released a few years later. The synths become more intense during the chorus as well, which is a very good move; keeps the energy high. The bass in this track is fairly simple, but effective, especially with all the other things going on in the track. The standout, especially if you haven’t heard it, is the breakdown, not present in the original opening! Everything spaces out, we get some rim taps and an overall half time feel once everything kicks in. The bass gets busier, with the absence of the busy beats. The padding is awesome, as well as the guitar synths, and the fill coming out of it back into the main feel is very smooth. It’s easy to tell that this is from the 90’s, with the bright mixing and certain aspects of the song, but I really love that about it, and I think in some ways it makes the track.
Crush 40 and Cash Cash did a remix of this track for this CD as well, with a crunchier, more guitar heavy feel to it. Go on and check it out!
